Carlo Balduini, was born in Pavia, Italy, in 1947 and graduated in medicine in 1972 at the University of this town. He then specialized in Hematology and Internal Medicine. His working life was dedicated to teaching, research and medical assistance. Balduini was professor of Internal medicine at the Pavia University and headed the Department of internal medicine of the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Foundation in Pavia. His research activity has been dedicated to different topics of internal medicine and hematology. In the last 20 years his main field of interest has been platelet disorders, with particular attention to inherited thrombocytopenias. In this field, Balduini contributed to the discovery of new diseases and to the identification of effective treatments. He currently direct the Ferrata-Storti Foundation, a non-profit organization that owns and manages the scientific journal Haematologica.
